Legal and Welfare Advice

BeatriceNilzaProfessional legal and welfare advice is highly complex and many people in Tower Hamlets need assistance to understand their rights and responsibilities. Our legal and Welfare advice services provide local people with a range of free, vital and impartial legal and welfare advice; some of which are funded by London Borough of Tower Hamlets; whilst others are under contracts with local housing associations and registered social landlords. account3's advice services are delivered in partnership with Legal Advice Centre and Wragge & Co LLP with the assistance of numerous volunteers and legal interns.

The advice team works with over 900 people a year and comprises of a dynamic group of highly qualified, skilled and experienced legal practitioners.

Often an insignificant problem in a person’s life can spiral out of control with tragic consequences. Clients may attend a drop-in session or take an appointment at one of a number of accessible outreach centres. If there is a valid reason a home visit will be arranged. Simple matters may also be solved over the phone or by email. We offer drop in sessions and appointment based sessions from Monday to Friday, daytimes and evenings; 50 weeks of the year.

Case Study

[HINT]Debt is a growing problem throughout the UK but hits poorer neighbourhoods particularly badly. account3 has been supporting people in rent arrears by assisting them to look at their total income and work out how to reduce the debt in a manageable way. Each year we put an average of £75,000 back in the pockets of local people by helping them to understand how to manage money better. While in the main, irresponsible lending has contributed to the problem, occasionally small mistakes can lead to serious problems for people. In the last year we have uncovered mistakes in calculations which have led to 4 people in blocks of flats paying more than they should for service charges demanded by their landlords. Uncovering these mistakes has led to reduction in rent for service charges for over 200 families in these blocks.[/HINT]
